Biological Growth and Scale

Fouling is the gradual coating of plate surfaces by biofilm, algae or mineral scale, which reduces sludge shedding and effective area.

Understanding the Problem

Unlike clogging (physical blockage), fouling is a surface phenomenon. Biofilm and algae thrive where nutrients and light are available; scale forms in hard or chemically dosed waters.

Fouled plates lose their smooth, self-cleaning surface, so sludge adheres and effective area falls. Stainless steel resists fouling better than many plastics and is easier to clean.

A combination of periodic cleaning and, where relevant, covering the unit against light controls most fouling.
