Plate Settler Flow Rate

Design, Average and Peak Flow

Correct sizing starts with the right flow. Plate settlers are sized on the peak hydraulic flow they must clarify, not the daily average.

Plate Settler Flow Rate

Three flows matter: average flow (typical daily throughput), design flow (the value the system is engineered around) and peak flow (the maximum instantaneous hydraulic load, e.g. storm or shift peaks).

Because settling performance depends directly on the instantaneous upflow velocity, a plate settler must maintain its target surface loading rate at peak flow. Sizing on average flow alone risks solids carryover during peaks.

Where peaks are extreme, equalization upstream of the plate settler can reduce the required area and stabilize performance — a common and cost-effective design choice.

Q_design = Q_peak × SF

SF = safety factor (typically 1.2–1.5) accounting for flow variability and solids fluctuation.
