Hydraulic loading describes the flow imposed on the settling area. Kept within design limits, it ensures particles have time to reach a plate before being carried over.

Plate Settler Hydraulic Loading

Hydraulic loading rate is numerically the flow per unit projected settling area — closely related to surface loading rate and expressed in the same units (m³/m²·h, i.e. m/h).

The key design principle is that the rise velocity of water between the plates must stay below the settling velocity of the particles to be removed. Excessive hydraulic loading shortens residence time and pushes solids over the weirs.

Even flow distribution across all plates is essential: if part of the plate pack is hydraulically overloaded while another is starved, effective capacity drops well below the nominal rating.

HLR = hydraulic loading rate [m/h]; equivalent to overflow / surface loading rate for a plate settler.
