Industrial and municipal flows are rarely constant — batch discharges, shift patterns, and storm events create surges in both flow rate and solids concentration. Because a plate settler is sized around a design surface loading rate, sudden hydraulic peaks can push solids over the plates and into the effluent.

An equalization basin upstream buffers these swings, delivering a near-constant flow and concentration to the coagulation and settling stages. This stabilizes chemical dosing, improves floc formation, and produces consistent effluent quality.

Where space or budget rules out a large basin, R+F can specify a settler with sufficient hydraulic margin or a modular configuration that tolerates variable loading.
