The inclination angle is central to inclined plate settler sizing — it sets both the projected settling area per plate and the plates’ ability to shed captured sludge.
Inclined Plate Settler Sizing
Inclined plate settlers rely on gravity: solids settle onto a plate and slide down its underside to the sludge hopper, while clarified water rises between the plates. The plate angle governs both effects.
A steeper angle reduces the horizontal projection of each plate (less effective area) but improves self-cleaning as sludge slides off more readily. The industry-standard 55–60° balances area efficiency against reliable sludge shedding.
Sizing therefore fixes the angle first (from the solids’ stickiness and settling behaviour), then computes the projected area per plate and the number of plates required for the design flow.
