Flow Bypassing the Settling Zone

Short circuiting lets water travel from inlet to outlet without spending the intended time in the settling zone — so solids leave uncaptured.

Understanding the Problem

Short circuiting is a hydraulic fault: fast flow paths form because of poor inlet baffling, thermal or density differences, or wind on open units. The nominal residence time is never achieved along these paths.

It is diagnosed with a tracer or dye test, which reveals early breakthrough. Density currents (from temperature or salinity differences) are a subtle but common cause.

Correcting inlet energy dissipation and baffling, and shielding open units, restores the intended flow pattern.

Common Symptoms

  • Effluent quality worse than sizing predicts
  • Tracer appears at outlet too soon
  • Cold/warm density currents visible
  • Carryover despite low average loading
