Poor Effluent Quality

A Systematic Diagnostic

When effluent consistently misses target, work through the three domains that govern plate settler performance: chemistry, hydraulics and sludge management.

Understanding the Problem

Poor overall effluent quality is rarely a single fault. A structured approach isolates the dominant cause quickly rather than changing many variables at once.

Chemistry first: is coagulation/flocculation forming settleable floc at the right pH and dose? Hydraulics next: is flow within design and evenly distributed without short circuiting? Sludge last: is the blanket controlled and the hopper cleared?

If all three are sound and targets are still missed, the influent may exceed what a plate settler alone can achieve — downstream polishing (filtration/membranes) may be required.

  • Effluent above TSS/turbidity target
  • Performance below design expectation
  • Multiple symptoms at once
  • Deterioration over time
