Sludge Rising Instead of Settling
Floating sludge is caused by gas generation or low-density material lifting solids to the surface — typically septicity, denitrification or grease.
Understanding the Problem
Sludge floats when gas bubbles attach to it or when it is inherently buoyant (grease, oil). Nitrogen from denitrification and hydrogen sulphide from septic conditions are the classic gas sources.
The fix targets the gas source: reduce sludge retention so it cannot go septic, address upstream nitrate/denitrification, and remove grease and oil before the settler.
A surface skimmer manages the symptom, but eliminating the gas source is the durable solution.
