Phosphorus Precipitation

Phosphorus precipitation is the chemical foundation of most phosphorus-removal strategies. Coagulant metal ions react with orthophosphate to form insoluble precipitates that can be physically separated from the water.

Correct coagulant selection, dose, pH, and mixing determine floc quality. Well-formed flocs settle readily; poorly formed flocs carry over and cause phosphorus breakthrough. A gentle flocculation stage ahead of the settler improves floc structure.

Plate settlers then clarify the precipitated stream, capturing the metal-phosphate flocs and delivering low-phosphorus effluent while concentrating the phosphorus into a manageable sludge.
