Chemical phosphorus removal is the most widely used method for meeting phosphorus limits. Dosing ferric chloride, alum, or similar coagulants converts soluble phosphorus into insoluble metal-phosphate precipitates.
The success of the process depends on efficient separation of these precipitates. Plate settlers excel here, capturing the light flocs at high loading rates and returning them as a thickened chemical sludge.
Compared with expanding conventional clarifiers, adding a plate settler stage allows plants to implement or intensify chemical phosphorus removal without major civil works.
