Hydraulic Loading Rate
Hydraulic loading rate expresses the volumetric flow applied per unit of effective settling area. It is the primary parameter used to size inclined plate settlers and directly determines the achievable effluent clarity.
Because inclined plates multiply the effective settling area within a small footprint, plate settlers accept far higher throughput than conventional clarifiers of the same plan area. Correct loading selection balances footprint, capital cost, and effluent quality.
Loading rates are selected based on particle characteristics, coagulation performance, and the target overflow quality. Conservative loading improves clarity and provides resilience against flow and load variation.
HLR = Q / A_effQ = flow rate (m³/h); A_eff = total projected (effective) settling area of the inclined plates (m²).
