The inverse of sizing: given an existing plate settler’s projected area, calculate the flow it can clarify to a target effluent quality.

Plate Settler Capacity Calculation

When evaluating an existing unit — for a retrofit, capacity check or second-hand assessment — you calculate capacity rather than size from scratch. The projected area is known; the question is the treatable flow.

Multiply the total projected settling area by the surface loading rate the application can sustain to obtain maximum treatable flow. Choose the SLR conservatively if effluent quality is critical.

This calculation is also used to check whether an existing conventional tank, once fitted with a lamella pack, will meet a higher throughput — the basis of most retrofit projects.
