Plate Settlers and MBR Systems

Pre-Clarification to Protect the Membranes

Membrane Bioreactors combine biological treatment with membrane separation. A plate settler upstream removes grit and heavy solids that would otherwise abrade and foul the membranes.

A Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) integrates activated sludge with micro- or ultrafiltration membranes, producing very high quality effluent in a compact plant. The membranes, however, are sensitive to grit, hair, fibers, and heavy inorganic solids.

A plate settler used as primary clarification ahead of the MBR removes settleable and inorganic solids, reducing the inert load on the biology and protecting the membranes from abrasion and fouling. This extends membrane life and reduces cleaning frequency.

In industrial MBR applications with high inorganic or fibrous loads, this pre-clarification step is particularly valuable.

Engineering Considerations

Membrane Protection

Removes grit and heavy solids that abrade and foul membranes.

Lower Inert Load

Reduces inorganic solids accumulating in the bioreactor.

Industrial Fit

Especially valuable where influent carries high inorganic or fibrous loads.
