Separating Biomass from Moving-Bed Reactors
MBBR processes shed detached biofilm that must be separated downstream. A plate settler — often with coagulant — provides compact, reliable solids–liquid separation.
Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR) grow biomass on suspended carriers. Unlike activated sludge, they do not rely on sludge recycle — but the detached biofilm and other solids leaving the reactor still need separation before discharge or further treatment.
A plate settler is an ideal downstream clarifier for MBBR: compact, robust, and, with a modest coagulant dose, capable of producing a clear effluent from the relatively light biological solids. It handles the variable solids output of biofilm processes well.
The result is a small-footprint biological treatment train suited to both new compact plants and capacity upgrades.
