Desludging and Hopper Management
Removing settled sludge on schedule is the single most important routine task — it keeps the blanket clear of the plates and protects effluent quality.
Sludge Removal
Settled solids collect in the hopper and must be removed before the blanket rises into the plate zone. Removal is by timed or level-controlled pump-out, or by scraper on larger units.
Desludge frequency is set by the solids mass loading: heavier loads need more frequent removal. Automating on hopper level is the most reliable approach.
Under-desludging causes carryover and floating sludge; over-desludging wastes water and thins the sludge unnecessarily — level control balances both.

Procedure
Monitor Blanket
Track sludge blanket level continuously or by daily check.
Desludge on Level
Trigger pump-out when the blanket reaches its set point.
Confirm Removal
Verify sludge is actually leaving — watch for bridging.
Check Concentration
Aim for target solids concentration in the withdrawn sludge.
Log Volumes
Record sludge volumes to trend solids loading.
